What I Ask From You
Horses must be well-behaved, within reason; they need to both pick up and hold their feet up for trimming, as well as stand reasonably politely for 20-30 minutes. Horses are horses, and they often have behavior issues related to hoofcare due to pain or past experience. I have ways to work with that, and very often, by the second or third trim, we're working together well. However, I will not tolerate behavior that endangers me, and I reserve the right to end a trim at any point. If you have an inexperienced horse, please discuss with me - I enjoy helping these horses learn that hoofcare is a positive experience, as long as you are doing the daily work of teaching them the basics.
I ask that you be open to discussion of any and all issues I bring up, including diet, environment, metabolic issues, pain, lameness, bodywork, and further therapies. You've enlisted my help, education, and experience - please let me share it!
My approach works on a 4-6 week schedule, most generally 5 weeks. This is not a negotiable point. There are some situations where we need go even shorter to rehabilitate. On exceedingly rare occasions, or in situations where the owner is willing to learn to manage maintenance issues between trims, cycles may be extended, but do not expect this.
Safe work environment: I need a reasonable place to work. I'm quite flexible, given that I don't have a big shoeing rig, and can easily head from horse to horse. During the summer, I need shade; during the winter, I need to be out of the mud. Please try to have horses legs dry and reasonably clean (please, no freshly hosed off legs!). Firm, reasonably level footing is preferred. Gold star client status goes to those who pick out feet and fly spray horses in advance, and extra kudos for those who have the next horse ready! For large groups in one location, I do strongly request that horses are ready to go.
When there comes a time to involve the vet, I ask you to involve me. Commitment is a two-way street. We are all a horse health team - owner, vet, hoofcare professional. I am more than happy to be present during a vet visit and work with the vet to find a solution. Immediately jumping ship to a new provider without an attempt to work with me is grounds for finding a new provider, period. I cannot do my job if you do not let me.
Payment is due at time of service. I make it easy - Cash, Check, PayPal, Venmo, or Zelle.
What You Receive
I strive to be on time (and notify you if times change), efficient but not hurried, take the time it takes for a job well done, and to continually provide a high degree of service.
I do my best to schedule the next visit at the previous visit and to confirm appointments in advance. If you are unable to make an appointment, I do have a cancellation fee. I am usually willing to trim your horse on my own provided I can do so safely and we have a good working relationship, which includes reliable payment history.
I work hard to continue my own education through the PHCP and various organizations, mentorships, and educational opportunities, and continually grow my business in ways that benefit you and your horse.
